Do you remember Jerry Maguire? You know, the “show me the money” guy. If you don’t recall the beginning of the movie, let’s quickly refresh our memories.
Jerry finds himself hating his place in the world. But soon, he has a profound moment of inspiration and begins drafting a mission statement…“not a memo, a mission statement.”He later entitles it “The Things We Think and Do Not Say: The Future of Our Business.”
Jerry completed his statement in the middle of the night. He took it in a bag to a Copymat and printed up a hundred and ten copies. After seeing the final product, the man at the Copymat said:
If You Want to be Great…
You’ve got to hang them out there. The written word is one of the most powerful things on this planet. It can inspire employees and team members. It can sell products and services. It can energize businesses and catapult a company to the fore of an industry.
But, the words have got to get written for the magic to happen. Thoughts that don’t get put into words remain as mere thoughts. The words are where the money is. Granted, Jerry’s mission statement wasn’t an immediate hit, but things worked out just fine for him in the end.
Plenty of Places to Hang Them
A beautiful thing about today’s business world is that there are numerous outlets to get your message out. Websites continue to serve as effective virtual front offices. Blogs still inform clients and customers. Social media can inform as well as energize products and services. Options do in fact become limitless if we add in such items as: e-books, white papers, e-newsletters, case studies, etc.
Perhaps at no other time in the history of business have companies had so many outlets to work within. But again, you’ve got to hang them out there. If you don’t get your word out, others will surely get theirs.
